In the horror and suspense film Get Out Chris Washington (Daniel Kaluuya) is taking the next step in his relationship with Rose Armitage (Allison Williams) and taking a weekend trip to meet her parents. Upon their arrival Chris meets Rose's parents Missy Armitage (Catherine Keener) and Dean Armitage (Bradley Whitford) and notices something off but thinks it's just their way of dealing with Rose's interracial relationship with Chris. Chris soon realizes he was wrong and as the weekend moves on things keep getting stranger and eventually leads to his bad thoughts becoming a reality turning his worst nightmare into a real-life experience.
The movie Get Out will keep you on the edge of your seat just when you thought you had it figured out a plot twist/plot point happens completely changing the direction of the film. When Chris is sitting down with the family and he finally gets to chat with Rose's brother Jeremy Armitage (Caleb Jones) you can see the movie take a big turn for the worst int this scene. The forcefulness that Jeremy shows towards Chris is a big turning point in the film and adds to the theme of the film by creating more suspense. Right after that scene the horror aspect comes into the film when Chris is outside trying to get air and gets spooked by Walter (Marcus Henderson) and returns inside the home to be startled by Missy Armitage. Missy Armitage proceeds to sit Chris down and tricks him into being hypnotized and this is when everything takes a turn for the worst. At this point in the film Chris knows something is not right he just can't put his finger on it. Things keep compiling through out the film leading up to his worst nightmare coming true when trying to leave the house with Rose. In this scene they tie the suspense and horror together by keeping Rose as an innocent person in the film and turning all the other family members against Chris. This doesn't last long as Rose breaks that innocent character identity and reveals her identity as a part of the dysfunctional crazy family. They then proceed to do what they had planned all along with Chris and begin the process of transferring Jim Hudson (Stephen Root) brain particles into Chris's head until at the last minute he figures out how to stop the situation and plans and successfully escapes the hell he had been living all weekend.
The movie Get Out did an awesome job with setting the stage for this film to be not only a suspenseful one but also a horror film. The lighting that they used in the film really helps give off that horror vibe while watching it. When something happens especially to Chris the lighting is always dark and dim making it hard to see anything. As you are trying to focus in on the scene something either pops up or happens making you jump or startled. Another technique they used to help give it that horror sense was the angle of the scenes being filmed. For instance, when Dean is cutting open Jim's head you can't see exactly what he is doing but you know it. Then the blood starts to drip onto the sheet that's separating us from the procedure and you get this gut wrenching feeling overwhelming you. If you have ever seen the movie Hostel you know exactly what I mean as it has the same story line of starting off as a great weekend trip and quickly turning into a complete nightmare. Using the same techniques to give you that suspense/horror feel to the movie. If you are into movie that have lots of plot twist and keep you on the edge of your seat I would highly recommend you see the movie Get Out.
